Costs & Inclusions
Price of Work in the UK Program
Important Notes
1. Contract
You will receive and sign the contract prior to your departure
to the UK or during your time at the Academy, and shall be
briefed by your employer and by colleagues after you arrive.
As a general rule, Work UK participants work approx. 5 or 6
days a week which means you will have 1 or 2 days off. In the
tourism industry it is general practice to work in different
shifts, i.e. night shift, early or late shift. You will be
working approx. 45-55 hours a week depending on job, season
and duties. Working overtime, remunerated or not, is also common
in the hotel and restaurant industry.
2. Board and lodging
Accommodation varies according to employer. Some hotels
allow their employees free board and lodging, others have special
employee accommodation in apartments or similar. In any case
The European Hotel Academy will help with any questions you
might have regarding your accommodation. Some employing hotels
do not offer board and lodging, but it’s easy to arrange
a furnished room or flat share in the vicinity. Your employer
will help you find what you are looking for, and will allow
you to stay at the hotel after your arrival until you have found
your own accommodation. Almost all partner hotels give their
employees free meals made in the hotel kitchens. In some other
hotels, participants may have to pay for these meals, depending
on how much they earn. Some hotels have cafeterias for their
employees where meals are sold at discount prices. The accommodation
is not luxurious, but certainly acceptable.
3. A living wage
Depending on the position, wages vary between £540 and £810
per month. Unqualified personnel will earn less than trained
personnel. If you are offered free board and lodging, your pay
will be less than others who live and eat outside the workplace. A
small amount will be deducted for the payment of your accommodation,
which your employer will provide or organise. Further deductions
will be made for taxes (22%) and national insurance (6%). Wages
vary depending on which hotel you work at. The weekly wages
are around £101 to £203. You will be given more
detailed information on this subject when you receive a job
offer.
Wages on The Channel Islands are
significantly higher but deductions will be made for taxes and
national insurance.
